The Italian privacy watchdog has decided to immediately block the popular TikTok app for all users whose age has not been verified. The cause is the death of a 10-year-old girl in Sicily who presumably had participated in a blackout challenge via the platform, in which she attempted to suffocate herself for as long as possible.
The Italian watchdog had warned the Chinese app company last month against violating a number of rules. Too little attention was paid to the protection of minors. Also, children under the age of 13 could easily register, which is a violation of the TikTok rule that users cannot be under the age of 13. Furthermore, according to the Italian authority, the app did not comply with privacy laws.
In a response to news agency Adnkronos, TikTok says privacy and security are a top priority and that the company is continuously working to protect young users.
The police investigation also started
Due to the block, all users whose age has not been determined with certainty will no longer be able to use their account. Thus, they cannot upload new videos or communicate with other people on the platform. The blockade will last until at least February 15th.
Police in Sicily has started an investigation into the girl's death. Among other things, it is being investigated whether she has been encouraged to participate in the challenge.
